In
the desert, quality of life for people who live there is
closely linked with a deep respect and understanding for
the natural environment. These regions urgently require
attention by international organizations, private-sector
partners, national and local authorities and
associations to combat environmental degradation and
improve the living conditions of desert communities,
many of whom live in extreme poverty.
Deserts are unique and have their own cultural identity,
traditions and potential to develop and host new
activities, some of which, like tourism, have not always
been suitably planned or implemented in a sustainable
manner. That is why, Teachers College has decided to
fill in the gap in such a neglected issue. It has
organized and hosted the Teachers College Desert Tourism
Exhibition to deepen the concept of desert tourism and
to help preserve cultural heritage by turning the
knowledge, craft skills and cultural traditions of local
communities into an attraction for desert tourists.
The Teachers College Desert Tourism Exhibition can help
desert travelers who are seeking solitude, authenticity,
cultures and traditions to be well-acquainted with the
local people and unspoiled landscapes. It also guides
them to have the choice of travel method and know the
rules that ensure a high quality of interaction, a good
travel experience and satisfaction. The Exhibition is
aimed at those interested in desert tourism, to
encourage them to work jointly to develop sustainable
desert tourism strategies. In partnership with the
College, tourism professionals can and should be a
driving force in this process by designing tourism
products that respect the human dignity and often
fragile living conditions of the communities involved,
while promoting social development and respect for the
environment.
